MAY 22, 2017 Vol. 111 No. 07 News journal of the Illinois Baptist State Association 2017 convention Hats in the ring Candidates reflect SBC's desire for diversity Phoenix The slate of nominees for Southern Baptist Convention offices to be elected in Phoenix represent a push toward greater diversity in SBC leadership. Walter Strickland , special ad- visor to the president for diversity at Southeastern Baptist Theologi- cal Seminary, will be nominated for the role of first vice president (cur- rently filled by Illinois pastor Doug Munton ). Strickland also teaches theology and operates a consulting agency to assist churches and organi- zations with diversity-related issues. As our nation and our convention become more diverse, it is imperative that our leadership reflect the diver- sity that marks the Kingdom of God and Heaven itself, said Georgia pas- tor James Merritt , who will nomi- nate Strickland. Beyond that we need people in leadership that reflect the best of Southern Baptists theologi- cally, spiritually, and personally. Walter Strickland meets both of these needs perfectly and I am excited about nominating him for the posi- tion of first vice president at our up- coming annual meeting in Phoenix. Also to be nominated in Phoenix is Jose Abella, pastor of Providence P. 3 Recognized by the Baptist Communicators Association and Evangelical Press Association
